“When I started Renew Exterior Lighting, it was not part of some long term business plan. It started because life forced us to change direction.
For years I worked as a traveling rope access technician, working on projects all around the country. It was exciting work, but everything changed when our oldest child experienced some life changing events that required us to come home and provide better stability for her.
We suddenly found ourselves in a position where we had to completely rethink our future. I did not know what I was going to do next.
Around that time I took a one week project in Ohio. During that job, a guy I was working with asked me a simple question. He said, ‘Have you ever thought about starting your own company?’
I had never considered it before, but that question planted a seed.
Within a week or two, my wife Jessica and I made a decision that would completely change our lives. We sold our house, moved into a school bus, and decided to bet on ourselves.
From the equity in the house we sold, Jessica handed me $20,000 and said, ‘Good luck.’
That was the beginning of Renew.
In the early days we operated the company out of that bus. Eventually we moved into a garage when we bought another house. Then we worked out of shipping containers in a friend’s backyard. From there we moved into a small warehouse. Today we operate from a large warehouse and have begun expanding into multiple locations across the country.
My wife and I now have three daughters, and what started as a small leap of faith has grown into something much bigger than we ever imagined. Between our headquarters and our additional locations, Renew now employs dozens of people who are able to support their families because of the work we do together.
Looking back, the growth has been incredible, but the heart of this company has never changed.
Renew exists because of people who believed in us when we were just getting started. That is why we work so hard to deliver an experience that goes far beyond simply installing lights. We care deeply about the people we serve, and we want every client to feel that.
We believe communication matters. Details matter. Doing things the right way matters.
And if we ever fall short, because mistakes do happen, we promise to do everything we can to make it right.

Giving back has always been important to me.
Growing up, my family did not have much. There were years where Christmas would not have happened if it were not for the generosity of others. Programs like Shop with a Cop made it possible for kids like me to experience Christmas when our families could not afford it.
Those moments stayed with me.
In 2023 we launched a program called Gifting Back, which allows us to take children shopping for Christmas. Each child receives $250 to spend on gifts, and volunteers go shopping with the parents and the child to help them pick out what they want for the holidays.
To date we have sponsored more than 70 children, and our goal is to sponsor over 1,000 children in the next five years.
